    With around 230 million active users and a significant share of the email market, Yahoo Mail is definitely still a major player in the email service provider (ESP) market. Whether it’s for marketing campaigns, lead generation efforts, or customer updates, getting your emails to land in Yahoo inboxes is of the essence. 

    Delays and detours to the spam folder can impact your open rates, click-through rates, and ultimately, your business bottom line. 

    The Warmy Research Team, in constant pursuit of deliverability solutions, conducted a thorough analysis and experiment to uncover which among different SMTP providers result in a faster delivery to Yahoo inboxes. We compared several critical factors, such as IP type, sending balance, and template settings, to determine which configurations result in the fastest inbox placement.

    The key players of the experiment

    Getting emails to land in Yahoo inboxes is crucial—less ideal situations like delays or emails landing in spam result in missed opportunities and less ROI.

    This research aimed to dive into the key factors influencing how quickly emails reach the Yahoo inbox. The goal? To identify the best combination of provider and other particular settings that will result in the fastest inbox delivery.

    Our research focused on three widely used SMTP providers: 

    • SendGrid
    • MailGun
    • Custom SMTP 

    As for the other factors, we analyzed these variables:

    • IP pool type (Dedicated vs. shared)
    • Warmup template type (Custom vs. default)
    • Sending balance (Balanced vs. unbalanced)
    • IMAP status (Enabled vs. disabled)

    The IP pool showdown: dedicated vs. shared

    When it comes to Yahoo inbox placement, the choice between a dedicated and a shared IP can dramatically affect how quickly your emails are delivered. 

    What’s the difference between dedicated and shared IPs?

    • A dedicated IP is an IP address exclusively assigned to one sender or domain. All the emails you send will come from the same IP, allowing you to control your sender reputation entirely. 
    • A shared IP is used by multiple senders. You share an IP, your reputation is also shared with the reputation of the other users on that IP. If another sender who shares the IP with you sends spammy emails and has bad sending practices, you will be affected too.

    Key finding: dedicated IPs reign supreme

    Our research clearly shows that dedicated IPs significantly outperform shared IPs when it comes to Yahoo inbox delivery:

    • Emails sent from dedicated IPs reached the Yahoo inbox in an average of 30.5 days
    • Emails sent from shared IPs took about 44.6 days on average. 
    • This is a 32% decrease in warmup time with a dedicated IP vs. a shared IP.

    Key takeaway: If you’re looking to speed up your email warm up and achieve faster inbox placement with Yahoo—go with a dedicated IP. 

    The more control you have over your sending reputation, the quicker you can establish trust with Yahoo, and the better off you’ll be—which is why dedicated IPs are the clear winner for business owners who want to maximize their email deliverability.

    A tale of two templates: custom vs. default 

    During the warmup process, senders can opt to use custom templates they design or default templates that the system or platform supplies:

    • Custom templates are personalized emails tailored to your brand in tone, look and messaging.
    • Default templates are built-in and system-created emails commonly provided by warmup tools or email marketing software. While functional, they lack brand-specific elements and personalization.

    Key finding: custom templates speed things up

    Here’s what our experiment revealed about the use of custom and default templates:

    • Using a high percentage of custom templates resulted in inbox placement within 32 days
    • High percentage of warmup templates resulted in inbox placement within 50 days
    • Using high percentages of custom templates speeds up Yahoo Inbox placement by ~36% on average compared to using default templates only.

    Key takeaway: Custom templates result in faster Yahoo inbox delivery. Default templates will do the job and warm up your domain—but custom templates take it to the next level and warm up your brand.

    A lot of email senders use default templates, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, since there may be a number of businesses in various industries using these, they are also less effective in building personal connections. They don’t carry the same engagement signals that providers like Yahoo prioritize when assessing sender reputation.

    On the other hand, custom templates provide a unique and personalized experience that helps build a stronger relationship with Yahoo. When you send tailored messages, these emails signal to Yahoo that you are committed to quality communication, which speeds up the process of inbox placement.

    Balanced or unbalanced sending: that is the question

    When warming up your email domain, how you distribute your email traffic plays a crucial role in how quickly your emails reach the Yahoo inbox. 

    What is sending balance?

    Balanced sending is the gradual increase of email volume distribution towards a specific provider—Yahoo, in this case. It’s basically how you ramp up the volume of emails you’re sending to Yahoo inboxes during the warmup instead of sending a large volume right away. 

    Unbalanced sending, on the other hand, is sending large volumes to Yahoo right away. Let’s say you’re sending 2,000 emails on a daily basis, with only 2% targeted to Yahoo inboxes. The next day, you adjust and 100% of emails are sent to Yahoo inboxes.

    Key finding: balance is key to speedier inbox placement

    • Balanced sending results in faster inbox placement at 36.5 days
    • Unbalanced sending reaches inbox placement after 50.8 days
    • Using balance reduces Yahoo Inbox warmup time by ~28%, making it a highly effective factor to implement during warmup strategies.

    Key takeaway: Balanced sending or gradual, consistent increase in sending volume can cut warm-up time. 

    Unbalanced sending is often likened to a red flag due to suspicious sending behavior, which leads to longer inbox placement times. A sudden surge in the number of emails, for example, can trigger Yahoo’s spam filters and delay your inbox delivery time. This suspicious sending behavior may affect your sender reputation or might get you blacklisted, making it harder to achieve successful inbox placement in the future.

    A gradual ramp-up gives Yahoo more than enough time to get to know your domain. You’re able to build a stable and trustworthy sender reputation with Yahoo which improves the chances of landing in the inbox. 

    The importance of enabling or disabling IMAP

    IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is an email protocol that syncs email across your devices. 

    • IMAP enabled means the email account can send and receive real-time updates, such as reading, deleting, or replying to emails, and these changes are reflected across all devices. 
    • IMAP disabled means that this syncing capability is turned off. Emails may only be downloaded or accessed without continuous server synchronization, limiting interaction tracking like replies or read status.

    Key finding: IMAP is your engagement booster

    • Emails sent with IMAP (Custom SMTP) enabled reached Yahoo inbox in approximately 20 days
    • Emails sent with IMAP disabled took around 44 days before inbox placement
    • IMAP reduces Yahoo Inbox warmup time by ~55% on Custom SMTP.

    Key takeaway: Our research shows that enabling IMAP during the warmup process speeds up Yahoo inbox placement times. 

    IMAP lets you track engagement signals which are meaningful trust signals that email providers, like Yahoo, use to help determine if an email sender is legitimate and if the content of that email is welcomed by the recipient. 

    Interestingly, in a similar experiment we did on factors that affected Outlook inbox placement speed, emails sent with IMAP enabled reached the inbox in approximately 49 days, and those with IMAP disabled took around 51.4 days. The 5% difference is not that significant compared to the results in this Yahoo inbox study—which shows how different ESPs have different preferences.

    In a nutshell, enabling IMAP via Custom SMTP ensures that your emails are not only sent but actively interacted with, speeding up the process of establishing a positive sender reputation with Yahoo and improving your inbox placement speed.

    The winning combination: the factors that contribute to faster Yahoo inbox delivery

    • Dedicated IPs provide full control over one’s sending reputation, ensuring that Yahoo can quickly recognize your sending patterns and build trust in your domain.
    • Custom templates make the warmup process faster by sending emails that reflect the content you’ll be sending in future campaigns—making your emails more authentic, trustworthy, and recognizable in Yahoo’s eyes.
    • Balanced sending ensures your email traffic gradually increases, avoiding sudden spikes that could cause your emails to be flagged as suspicious.
    • Enabling IMAP on custom SMTP is an added bonus. While IMAP alone won’t guarantee inbox placement, when combined with dedicated IPs, custom templates, and balanced sending, it significantly enhances the likelihood of landing in the inbox faster.
